Daren has over 30 years’ experience in the stone industry, and is now a director of D J Tailby Limited, using his extensive skills to provide a service to clients on masonry contracts.
From being apprenticed at a local company in Kettering he has developed his skills to include complex masonry, letter carving, draughtsmanship and stone fixing. These skills provided Daren with the expertise to join a stonemasonry college as a lecturer, where he spent 7 years teaching apprentice stone masons from across the country, some from stone companies and others from cathedral workshops.
His knowledge also enabled him to advise on the re-publication of two technical stone masonry books, (Geometry of Construction – T.B.Nicholls & N.P.Keep, and Practical Masonry – Purchase). Daren contributed to the writing of technical stonemasonry qualifications for City & Guilds as a technical consultant, giving training advice with direction of content in both technical theory and practical assessments. His work in the sector has been recognised by the Worshipful Company of Masons, leading to the presentation of a Master Mason Certificate.
Daren along with business partner Richard Hoyle now employs a team of skilled craftsmen who are dedicated to providing quality products and services.
Richard Hoyle was born in Yorkshire to a family whose history in the stone industry now spans three centuries. Richard developed a great passion as a young boy to follow in his ancestors’ footsteps and planned his career in stonemasonry while still at school.
Following a successful apprenticeship where Richard gained extensive and expert knowledge in all aspects of the stone industry he started his own stonemasonry company, which ran successfully for five years.
Keen to pass on his knowledge and passion for the industry Richard then started lecturing stonemasonry which he continued doing for ten years, training many apprentices from cathedral workshops and from commercial firms across the UK.
Richard has also used his extensive experience of both stonemasonry and education to work for City & Guilds as a technical educational consultant, writing new stonemasonry qualifications, including course materials, written exams and practical assessments.
Between 2009 and 2010 Richard, in collaboration with Daren, worked with Donhead Publishing to reintroduce two specialist technical books (Practical Masonry by W R Purchase and Geometry of Construction by Nichols & Keep) that had been out of print for many years. For this Richard and Daren carried out vast research on the history of both books and wrote new introductions for them. Both books were well received and they continue to sell very well.
Having worked together for many years and being keen to return to the industry, Richard joined Daren in partnership to form D J Tailby Ltd where their combined skills and knowledge are now used to great effect ensuring the highest quality work and customer service available.
